Determination of Organic Phosphorus in Soils: II. Ignition Method1

J. O. Legg and C. A. Black2

ABSTRACT

A procedure was developed in which comparable samples of soil are extracted by concentrated HCl before and after ignition for 1 hour at 240°C. The difference in content of inorganic phosphorus in the extracts before and after ignition may be taken directly as an estimate of the content of organic phosphorus in the soil. Analysis of a number of samples by the ignition procedure and an extraction procedure developed previously, however, showed a small systematic deviation of results obtained by the former method from results obtained by the latter. An empirical regression equation was calculated for use in predicting the content of organic phosphorus by the extraction procedure from the content of organic phosphorus by the ignition procedure.
