ABSTRACT
A comparison of 5 methods for the determination of cation-exchange capacity of soils of the Lower Coastal Plain was made on surface and subsoil samples of 4 soil series. The methods employed were: (1) direct distillation of NH4+-saturated soils, (2) distillation of ammonia from NaCl extract, (3) barium chloride-triethanolamine, (4) calcium acetate-barium hydroxide, and (5) calcium acetateflame. On the average, method 3 gave results intermediate between those obtained by methods 1 and 2, method 4 gave low results and method 5 gave high results.
