The Dependence of Ionic Diffusion on the Moisture Content of Nonadsorbing Porous Media1

A. Klute and J. Letey2

ABSTRACT

The dependence of the self diffusion coefficient of Rb86Cl on the moisture content of packings of 75 and 200µ glass beads was measured. The ordinary diffusion equation was assumed to apply. Diffusion coefficient measurements were made by a transient method. The results indicated a very rapid decrease of diffusivity as the moisture content was decreased. The results are discussed in relation to the path length and moisture content of the medium. An electrical method was used to evaluate the effective path length.
