Release of Fixed Potassium as a Diffusion Controlled Process1

M. M. Mortland and Boyd Ellis2

ABSTRACT

Rate of release of fixed K from vermiculite with 0.1N NaCl was studied to attempt to characterize the ratelimiting process. Of the processes considered, film diffusion satisfied most criteria as rate limiting. The activation energy of the release of K by 0.1N NaCl in the system studied was about 3,550 cal./mole, a value of the order frequently obtained for diffusion processes.
