The Importance of Illite as a Source of Potassium in Nebraska Soils1

Fawzi M. A. H. Abed and James V. Drew2

ABSTRACT

The uptake of nonexchangeable K by alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) from samples of the surface layers of 8 Nebraska soils in a greenhouse experiment was more closely related to illite contributed to the soils by fine silt (r = 0.85) than to K-bearing minerals contributed to the soils by other separates. Measurements of exchangeable K may underestimate the K-supplying power of Nebraska soils for alfalfa when relatively large amounts of illite are contributed to the soils by fine silt.
