A Portable Low-Intensity Rain Simulator for Field and Laboratory Use1

Reuven Steinhardt and Daniel Hillel2

ABSTRACT

A design is presented for construction of a dripping-type rain simulator that is useful for study of infiltration characteristics of surface-crusted soils and comparison of surface treatments for runoff inducement. The apparatus is lightweight, portable, and easily assumbled. Rain intensity can be varied between 4 and 100 mm/hr with adequate uniformity of distribution. Raindrop size and impact velocity, as well as rainfall intensity, can be controlled independently.
