The Effect of Carbon Dioxide on the Chemisorption of Ammonia by Base-saturated Clays1

M. C. F. du Plessis and Wybe Kroontje2

ABSTRACT

The presence of CO2 increased and stabilized the effective retention of ammonia, applied as aqua ammonia, by base-saturated clays. Ca2+- and Mg2+-bentonites particularly showed a striking increase in the retention of ammonia in the presence of CO2.

It is postulated that the Ca2+ and Mg2+ exchanged by ammonia, are precipitated as highly insoluble compounds thus stabilizing the retention of chemisorbed ammonia.
