Variation in the Relative Distribution of Amino Sugars with Depth in Some Soil Profiles1

F. J. Stevenson and O. C. Braids2

ABSTRACT

Ion exchange chromatography of the amino sugars in hydrolysates of several soil profiles revealed that the proportion of the amino sugar material in the form of glucosamine increased dramatically with increasing depth. Little variation was noted in the relative distribution of amino sugars in the surface horizons of the soils examined.
