The Movement of Zinc to Plant Roots1

H. F. Wilkinson, J. F. Loneragan and J. P. Quirk2

ABSTRACT

Previous workers have classified nutrients on the basis of their movement patterns to plant roots, as shown by autoradiographic techniques, together with calculations using soil and plant nutrient levels and transpiration ratios. Autoradiographs of 65Zn depletion were similar to those shown by other workers for 32P. No difference was observed in zinc levels in tops or roots when transpiration ratios were trebled (from 49 ml/g to 173 ml/g), indicating that zinc absorption is not dependent on mass flow of solution to the roots.
