Nitrate Content of the Upper Rio Grande as Influenced by Nitrogen Fertilization of Adjacent Irrigated Lands1

C. A. Bower and L. V. Wilcox2

ABSTRACT

Over a 30-year period, when the application of N fertilizer to three irrigated areas adjacent to the Upper Rio Grande increased from a very low to a high level, the overall NO3-N concentration of the river did not increase, indicating no significant stream pollution by NO3-N from applied N fertilizer.
