Environment and Its Role in the Development of a Scientist¹

ABSTRACT

Factors influencing the development of a scientist are discussed. The most important factors motivating a scientist to greater effort are generally those provided by fellow scientists and the people whom we serve. These factors include assurance that his objectives are worthwhile, recognition of his efforts, and the opportunity to publish the truth as he sees it and bear the consequences of his actions.

Budget, technical help, and facilities are also important factors determining his production. However, the development of an enterprising scientist cannot be prevented and may sometimes be accelerated by deficiencies in his physical environment.
