Clay-Rich Horizons Over Limestone—Illuvial or Residual?¹

ABSTRACT

The formation of fine clay horizons over limestone in the soils studied results from illuviation and is not residual material resulting from the dissolution of limestone. This conclusion is reached on the basis of ¹⁴C dating of the carbon complexed with the clay, X-ray diffractograms, and clay size.
