Soil Properties Influencing Sorption and Desorption of Lindane1

R. S. Adams, Jr. and Paulina Li2

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine the soil properties responsible for the sorption of lindane. Soils were sampled from 16 Minnesota locations and varied widely in organic carbon, colloidal clay, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable ions, pH, and moisture retention. Variability in lindane sorption was almost entirely due to organic carbon (R2 = .890). No combination of variables significantly improved this relationship. With the exception of the Blue Earth samples, a lacustrine soil, desorption of lindane was complete and independent of all soil variables measured and the amount of lindane sorbed.
