ABSTRACT
Rate of hydrolysis of pyrophosphate, applied as (NH4)3-HP2O7·H2O, was measured in four soils under flooded and
atm moisture content. Hydrolysis was faster under flooded conditions than at
atm moisture. Pyrophosphate hydrolysis was determined to be a first-order reaction under flooded conditions but not at
atm moisture content. The first-order rate constants under flooded conditions ranged from 2.09 x 10-5 min-1 to 1.43 x 10-4 min-1 depending upon the soil and temperature of incubation. Half-life values for applied pyrophosphate varied from 0.6 to 3.9 days. The activation energy for pyrophosphate hydrolysis under flooded soil conditions was calculated to be 4,500 cal/mole for a Katy sl soil.
