Adsorption and Desorption of Diuron as a Function of Soil Properties1

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to determine the properties of 12 arid-zone soils low in organic matter (0.1–1.7%) that are responsible for the adsorption and desorption of diuron [3-(4,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea]. Statistical analysis rendered r2 values for diuron adsorbed in relation of CEC, specific surface area, and organic carbon percentage equal to 0.785, 0.754, and 0.476, respectively. It was concluded that CEC or specific surface area can account for the variability of diuron adsorption in arid-zone soils.

Variability of diuron desorbed was basically due to diuron initially absorbed (r2 = 0.864). Again desorption could be predicted from specific surface area (r2 = 0.846) or CEC (r2 = 0.828) and not from organic carbon percentages (r2 = 0.372). Multiple regression analysis did not practically improve the linear relationship obtained from adsorption and desorption.
