ABSTRACT
Pitting of the probe tip occurs when probe-type ultrasonic vibrators are operated for approximately 10 hours. This reduces the output of ultrasonic energy from the probe and increases the vibration time required for dispersion of soils by ultrasonic vibration of soil-water suspensions. The effect of pitting can be eliminated by polishing the probe tip with fine emery paper after every 30 min of probe operation. A simple method of checking the performance of probe-type vibrators is described.
