ABSTRACT
The measured value of acid-titratable basicity (ATB) or "alkaline earth carbonate from acid neutralization" decreases with increasing soil/solution ratio or the increasing concentration, C, of excess acid. The ATB is almost independent of C, however, in the range of 0.1 to 0.3N acid remaining after neutralization with 0.5N HCl. In coarse-textured soils, the ATB extrapolated to C = 0 is reasonably close to the soil's carbonate content.
