Differential Infrared Spectroscopy in the Study of Parathion-Bentonite Complexes1

ABSTRACT

Differential infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate parathion degradation in the adsorbed state. This technique enables observations of the 1,380–1,150 cm–1 region, which is usually overlapping with the strong SiO absorption of bentonites. The appearance of the P=O absorption band upon heating clay-parathion complexes, in conjunction with other tests, confirmed that parathion degradation on bentonites occurs mainly via a rearrangement reaction.
