ABSTRACT
The effect of C2H2 on nitrification in soils was determined to evaluate the use of C2H2 in field and laboratory denitrification studies. The presence of as little as 0.1% (vol/vol) C2H2 completely inhibited nitrification. The effect of C2H2 was reversible, but an 8- to 10-day period was required before nitrification returned to the rate in the control. The results suggest that the C2H2 approach must be limited to those experiments in which either only nitrate fertilizers are used or where nitrification is assumed complete before denitrification commences.
