Subsoil Lime Injector1

D. L. Anderson and J. G. Hendrick2

ABSTRACT

A technique was developed for applying suspended lime along the sides of a vertical slit in the soil formed by a narrow, blade-like tillage tool extending about 18 cm below the plow layer. Dolomitic limestone was kept in suspension without agitation using a liquid polymer dispersant and was successfully injected into the subsoil 18 to 36 cm deep using a slitter blade attached to a chisel. The implement required less drawbar force than a chisel operated at the same depth. The implement and technique may also be useful for application of other materials into the subsoil.
