ABSTRACT
An empirical method has been developed to estimate the standard free energy of formation (
Gof,298) values for hydrated borate minerals. The method is completely general, and the only parameter used in the computation is the number of born atoms in the polyanion unit of a mineral. The standard free energy of formation values estimated by this method are within ± 10 kJ of the experimental data obtained from the literature. This method has fewer limitations than the structural method of Bassett.
