Linearized Moisture Flow with Root Extraction Over Two-Dimensional Zones1

A. W. Warrick and D. O. Lomen2

ABSTRACT

A solution of Richards' equation is developed for flow from a two-dimensional, rectangular source or sink. The soil is assumed uniform with the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity exponentially related to pressure head. Steady-state conditions are used, although a time-dependent solution is discussed. The results are useful for approximating any two-dimensional, explicitly defined root extraction pattern. This is possible by superimposing several rectangles to give the desired effect. Calculations are rapid with negligible computer time. Several examples are given appropriate for trickle irrigation, including stratified uptake regions, noncontiguous extraction zones, and a nonsymmetric case.
