Preparation of Large Cross Sections from Stony Soils1

B. Buchter, J. Leuenberger, F. Richard, H. Flühler and H. M. Selim2

ABSTRACT

A method was developed to obtain large, undisturbed soil samples for the description of structural properties in soils containing large amounts of coarse fragments. The dimensions of the sample were 0.5 by 0.8 by 1.8 m which extended to the entire depth of the soil profile. The method involved surrounding the sample with concrete; drying and impregnating it with epoxy resin; and cutting it into cross-sections with a diamond circular saw. The cross sections were then used for the analysis of the arrangement of the coarse fraction.
