This issue's cover: Cognettia clarae Bauer, Oligochaeta, Enchytraeidae. The species has been described the first time by Roswitha Bauer in 1993 in Austrian spruce forests. The dark roundish shadow behind the tip of the worm comes from a pair of large nephridia, a peculiarity of the species. The species was found on the East Italian side of the Alps too (Ulfert Graefe, unpublished data), within the Oa horizon of moder humus forms, at the top of a dystric Cambisol on acid substrate, in altimontane spruce forests. The photo has been taken by Damiano Zanocco while observing some samples of Oa horizons coming from spruce alpine forests investigated by Galvan et al. and presented in this issue. Reproduced with permission, from Humus forestali, manuale per il riconoscimento e l'interpretazione – applicazione alle faggete, Zanella et al. 2001, Ed. Centro di Ecologia Alpina, Trento, Italy. Please see p. 548–557, Humus Components and Soil Biogenic Structures in Norway Spruce Ecosystems by Paola Galvan, Jean-François Ponge, Silvia Chersich, and Augusto Zanella.
